Origins

Crystal Castles formed in Toronto around 2003 when Ethan Kath began producing music influenced by early video game soundtracks, industrial noise and no-wave. The project took shape when he met Alice Glass, a teenager from the city's underground punk scene.

Their early material circulated as low-quality MP3s and CDrs through online blogs and forums. The lo-fi aesthetic was never accidental — it was central to the sound. Distortion, saturation and obscured vocals became their trademark.

Era I — Alice Glass (2004–2014)

The first decade of Crystal Castles is defined by the duo's chemistry and contradictions. Kath's abrasive electronic constructions collided with Glass's confrontational vocals and chaotic stage presence. Shows were notorious for crowd-surfing, thrown microphones and noise that bordered on assault.

They signed to Last Gang Records and Fiction Records, releasing their debut self-titled album in 2008 followed by Crystal Castles (II) in 2010. Both records were met with widespread critical acclaim and introduced them to international festival stages.

In September 2014, Alice Glass announced her departure from Crystal Castles via social media, citing unspecified personal reasons. Years later she elaborated on the circumstances.

Era II — Edith Frances (2014–2016)

Kath continued the project with a new vocalist kept largely anonymous. The album (III) was released in November 2016 under the name Crystal Castles, featuring a more polished, melancholic sound. Shortly after its release, the band dissolved.

Note: The vocalist on (III) was later identified as Edith Frances. She has since pursued work outside of Crystal Castles.

Sound & Influence

Crystal Castles drew from a wide range of sources: early electronic music, punk's aggression, chiptune's nostalgia, industrial music's abrasiveness and dream pop's ethereal quality. The result was a sound that defied easy categorisation and influenced a generation of electronic artists.
