✦
origins // 2003–2007
✦
crystal castles began in toronto, canada around 2003. ethan kath (claudio palmieri) started making music using distorted lo-fi synthesizers and gameboy-derived sounds. he met alice glass, then a teenager in the toronto punk and noise scene, and the project took its definitive form. early releases circulated on myspace and blog culture. the aggressive, blown-out sound — equal parts rave, punk and broken electronics — built a cult following before any formal label deal. ⚡
sound & aesthetic
⚡
their sound was defined by: distorted gameboy / 8-bit synthesis, blown-out drum machines, alice glass's shredded and reverb-drenched vocals, layered noise and texture, heavy use of lo-fi recording artefacts, and a refusal of conventional pop structure. visually, the project was deliberately evasive — very few photos early on, anonymous-looking live appearances, a rejection of the celebrity machinery. this made them both mysterious and intensely compelling. ☠
dissolution // 2014–2016
☠
alice glass announced her departure from crystal castles in october 2014. kath continued with vocalist edith frances, releasing the third album (III) and touring. in november 2016, glass publicly disclosed abuse she experienced during the relationship. kath denied the accusations. the band was effectively dissolved. → see the after section for more. |
